The Assembly

The National Assembly for Wales was set up in 1999, following an All Wales referendum.

There are 60 Assembly Members, 40 representing a constituency and a further 20 representing regions.

A number of issues have been devolved to the National Assembly for Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government. The National Assembly for Wales is responsible for:

  • Health and Social Services
  • Education
  • Culture, Welsh Language, Sport
  • Economic Development
  • Rural affairs
  • Transport
  • Local Government
  • The Environment

The recent Government of Wales Act gives the National Assembly for Wales further legislative powers: the Assembly can now make its own laws, or Measures, providing they deal with issues within devolved competence.
